Todd VanHouten wrote the music for “I Run To You.” Todd explains that when he wrote the music, there was a longing in it. Jodi Doak wrote the words to “I Run To You.” She tells about her inspiration for the song:
In my career I encounter people in the worst of times and the best of times. No one has an easy road and life throws at all of us both times of sorrow and joy. The Bible talks over 100 times about how we are supposed to seek the Lord out in our lives in all circumstances. After we recorded this song, I started playing it in the morning on my way to work and it was a reminder to me daily of God’s command to seek him with passion and purpose. In times of difficulty, it was actually these words God gave me that brought me encouragement and comfort, like I know they will bring you as well.
When I first heard this music, it took me to a time in my early 20s when I had a vision of Christ and I was sitting in His presence. It was then that my desire to Run to the Lord and my deep longing for Him was etched within me and the words to this song describe how I felt sitting there at His knees “Deep within my heart in every way, I’m longing for you. I have stepped into Your light and felt Your grace, Oh let your Spirit fall upon this song of praise!” I Run To You is about seeking God in all times of life. It is both a song of praise, an anthem, and a gentle reminder to seek God in our lives.
I hear Todd’s voice in the beginning of this song as a gentle whisper and reminder that is soothing to the soul and beautiful in every way. And as the song builds the power of his voice takes me to the place of eagerly seeking and running after Him. Remember, He is always there – We just have to run to Him.
